Classic Rock Challenge

The original Lakes Classic Rock challenge was devised as a running and climbing adventure, with the aim of linking all fifteen Lake District rock climbs in Ken Wilson’s book, Classic Rock - on foot, unsupported, all in under 24 hours. The climbers carried all their climbing kit and food, and went without sleep. We’ve adapted this for mere mortals into different levels of challenge, by adding in transport for some sections, and, more importantly, sleep. The hardest climb is graded at MVS, so anyone fit and motivated will succeed.

Previous climbing experience is not essential, although for non-climbers we would recommend a day of climbing tuition immediately before the challenge to cover the basics of rock climbing.

The Different Options

The maximum ratio for the Classic Rock Challenge is 1:3, and it can be undertaken in different ways to suit your level of fitness and time available. With private guiding, you choose your dates, and you can tailor the challenge to suit the time you have available and your particular aspirations - you can choose one climb to complete, or you can undertake the whole thing. We also offer a three-day course, where you join other climbers on the course, and we tick off as many of the routes as weather and fitness levels allow.

Option 1. Private Guiding

A. As individual days fitted in to suit your schedule.

B. Over four days:

  • as a single four-day trip - for the very fit and motivated. This is a really significant challenge, not to be underestimated. Think the Cuillin Ridge on Skye, the Matterhorn in Switzerland - and then some.
  • as two two-day slots - the same itinerary as the four-day trip, but allowing for rest between the two modules

C. Over six days:

  • as a single six-day trip - still a great challenge but giving more time
  • as three two-day slots

Option 2: Three-Day Classic Rock Course

Over three days we will tick off as many of the routes as we can, depending on the weather and levels of fitness of the participants.

Dates: Saturday 13th, Sunday 14th and Monday 15th May 2017

Max Ratio: 1:3. Two bookings needed for the course to run.

Cost: £250 per person. This includes transport during the course. It does not include travel to the Lake District, accommodation or food. See below for travel & accommodation info.

Preparation

The fitter you are, the more likely you are to complete the Challenge - swimming, cycling, and hill-walking are all good preparation. Long days in the mountains carrying a big heavy rucksack will be an essential part of your preparation. Reading the Lake District chapter in Classic Rock by Ken Wilson will give a flavour of the routes you will be climbing.
